Volunteer Spotlight – Carlton Schroeder
Many of us know and appreciate Carlton for is his many contributions to GHT. His focus has been with anything that requires engineering. As a retired Civil Engineer Carlton has been invaluable to GHT’s mission of bike trail development. He helps develop conceptual designs, develops cost estimates, acts as GHTs liaison person with engineering firms, conducts on-site engineering assessments and is involved in all aspects of trail development.
Carlton is also a tireless promoter of GHT and has served on our nominating committee personally recruiting many volunteers to join one of our new Action Teams. He has developed a connection with the Northland Pines High School for students to work on projects for credit and experience.
Carlton started thinking about a move to the Northwoods as he drove through Wisconsin on a Lake Superior circle tour back in the late 1970’s. At the time he had been working in Cleveland just a couple of hours away from his hometown of Toledo. When he was offered a job with Exxon to work on a mining project soon after that road trip, he packed up his family and made the land of the Hodag (i.e. Rhinelander) his new home. After enjoying almost 10 years in Rhinelander followed by moves for work to Texas, Connecticut, and then back again to Ohio, Carlton and his wife, Barb, decided to retire in the Northwoods.
He’s always been interested in building things. This led him to study civil engineering and to go on to receive his master’s degree from the University of Toledo. Early in his career he worked for McDonald Douglas in St. Louis, Missouri and for a land development group on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. Fitness has always been important to him and with his love of designing things, working on the bike trails was right up his alley. He was asked to sit in on the Conover bike trail public meeting about 11 years ago and he’s been involved with GHT ever since.
Carlton enjoys playing and is currenlty recruiting for his “Senior” softball team out of Sugar Camp. He also enjoys talking to his fellow Chrysler 300 club members. He volunteers at the high school to tutor students in various math classes. He’s also always helping his daughters with several projects including their family business resort, Thunderhead Lodge, in Butternut. On Sunday mornings you’ll usually find him and Barb at the Eagle River First Congregational United Church of Christ.
Please join us in thanking Carlton for his many contributions to GHT.
